The basics
What it is, and what it needs.
What is LockIn?
A fitness accountability coach for Android and Wear OS. You commit to one action for the day and shut a padlock on it, train through guided sessions rather than a checklist, and get a coach that reads your recovery before it decides how hard to push. The point is not to record more. It is to make the quiet bail harder than doing the thing.
Do I need a smartwatch?
No. The phone app is the whole product and works on its own. A watch adds heart rate zones during a session and lets you run a workout from your wrist. One thing worth knowing: the readiness score needs sleep, resting heart rate or heart rate variability, and a phone alone does not produce those. They have to come from a watch or tracker that writes into Health Connect.
What do I need to run it?
Android 8.0 or newer on the phone, and Wear OS 3 or newer for the watch app.
Is there an iPhone version?
Not yet. LockIn is Android and Wear OS only. An iOS version is something that happens if the Android one earns it, not before.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes. The app is fully usable signed out and offline. Network features exist only where you switch them on, such as circles or cloud backup.
Data and privacy
Where your data actually sits.
What does local-first actually mean here?
Your health, workout, food and body data lives on your phone and is not synced to a server. It is held encrypted with AES-256, with the keys in the Android Keystore, so it is never written in plaintext. It is also excluded from Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer, so uninstalling or clearing app data removes it permanently.
Does my health data ever leave my phone?
Not unless you turn on cloud backup, and even then it is sealed before it moves. Backups are encrypted on the phone with a passphrase only you have, using AES-256-GCM with the key derived by PBKDF2 over a fresh salt. What reaches the server is an opaque blob that cannot be opened without your passphrase. That also means a forgotten passphrase is unrecoverable, which is the honest cost of the arrangement.
How does the food scanning work?
Barcode decoding runs on the device. Meal photo recognition also runs on the device, and the image is processed in memory and never saved or uploaded. Scanning is free and always will be.
Can I trust it if I have a food allergy?
Allergy exclusions are ordinary deterministic code with tests, not an AI guess. The same is true of whether a workout counts as completed and how training progresses. A model that is right ninety-nine times out of a hundred is the wrong tool for a peanut allergy. That said, LockIn is not a substitute for reading the label, and food databases contain mistakes.
Do you sell my data or run ads?
No. There is no advertising and no data sale, and no analytics or crash reporting SDK in the app either. The subscription is the business model, which is precisely why there is one.
Does run tracking need Google Play Services?
No. Route tracking uses the Android platform location APIs directly, so there is no dependency on Play Services location and no third-party mapping service. GPS is optional and off until you start an outdoor run.
Getting it
Where things stand.
How do I get LockIn right now?
It is in closed testing on Google Play, so it is not on the public store yet. You can ask to join as a tester, which is what gets it to a public release.
What does it cost?
The app is free and stays useful on its own. LockIn Plus is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year and adds accountability circles, adaptive programming, deeper history, cloud backup and the community food database. Nothing to do with safety, and nothing you have already recorded, sits behind it.
Can I get my data out?
Yes. You can export an encrypted backup at any time and restore it on another device, or from the first onboarding screen after a reinstall. Restoring never requires an active subscription, because getting your own data back should not be a paid feature.
Is LockIn a medical device?
No. It is not diagnostic and cannot tell you what is wrong with you. It reads signals like sleep and heart rate variability to decide how hard to push a workout, and nothing more than that. If you have a medical concern, talk to a doctor rather than an app.
Ask a person.
LockIn is built by one person, so you are emailing the developer directly, not a queue. Include your phone model and Android version and it will be faster.
If you have a medical concern, contact a doctor rather than an app developer. LockIn is not a medical device and cannot advise you on symptoms.
